little adventures...

Today seemed like a great day for a walk, and since I am "training" for the Jimmy Fund walk this September,  I am supposed to accomplish one long walk each week. Today, I charged up my ipod and decided to walk the bike path to Trader Joe's. (I have gotta start carrying my camera or at least upgrade to a phone with a better camera!) About 3/4 of the way there, I ran across a sign for Shaker sale and mill tours. I decided, why not just check it out and I am so glad I did... The Shaker stuff was great but I am on a budget! I found myself much more in awe of the building housing the furniture... so old! Incredible old wooden floors and walls, and the smell, just makes me think of childhood and home! (I grew up in a 200 year-old farmhouse) I just love it! After wandering around the store, I found my way into the Old Schwamb Mill, a meticulously preserved mill from the 19th century, with all the machines still set up. Apparently, this mill made curved, oval frames which were especially in demand for civil war soldier portraits. I got to see all the different trim tools and walking around, the floor creaks and groans and I wondered if I might fall through! But still, really felt like an amazing adventure... on the way out I grabbed a few info pieces and brochures for other local historic places. Today just was a pleasant reminder of my love of history and all things "old." I cannot wait to bring my dad back to the mill (I called him immediately after to tell him all about it!) I just know he would love it there, we share a bond and love for this kind of stuff. Just last week, he helped me to pick through all his old boards to find the perfect old, weathered shelf for my kitchen! I can't wait to explore more around where I have moved to, it is brimming with history and I want to explore it all! I looked up the Old Schwamb Mill website (oldschwambmill.org) and here are a few pics:
